Audio-Technica Announces New ATH-ANC27 and ATH-ANC25 Noise Cancelling Headphones

When it comes to noise cancelling headphones, you are generally looking at spending well over $100. Audio-Technica has two sets of noise cancelling headphones that are each under $100. The new headphones are the ATH-ANC27 and ATH-ANC25 and both of them have similar features.

The ANC27 headphones can block up to 85% of the sound in a room using active noise cancellation and are an over-the-ear design. The ANC25 are on-ear style and can blocked 80% of the sound in the room. Both sets use active noise cancellation tech and are compatible with Apple products like the iPhone and iPod.

The headphones also ship with a ¼” adapter, airline adapter, and a soft carry case. Both of the headphones need an AAA battery for the noise cancellation feature and will work with noise cancellation turned off. The ANC27 headphones sell for $99.95 and the ANC25 sell for $79.95.

Asus shows Off U36 Notebook

When it comes to notebooks there are two sorts of geeks. There is the type of geek that will pay big money for a machine that is big and has lots of power inside and there is the geek that will pay big money for a notebook that is small and has decent performance with a focus on mobility.

Asus has unveiled a new notebook computer called the U36 that is ultrathin and definitely aimed at the mobile type. The rig has an Intel core i3 or i5 processor and is only 19mm thick. It’s able to be that thin thanks to power sipping hardware and a dual heat pipe cooler for the CPU.

The case of the notebook is made from an alloy of magnesium and aluminum. The little machine weighs 1.44kg, uses NVIDIA graphics with Optimus tech and has a 4-cell battery. That Optimus tech means that the thin machine has some sort of discrete GPU inside along with integrated graphic as well. That 4-cell battery is good for 10 hours of use. Pricing and availability are unknown.

NEC MultiSync Turns 25 with 40M Monitors Shipped

NEC’s line of MultiSync computer screens have been around for 25 years now. You can bet that over that quarter of a century the company has seen lots of different technology come and go. NEC has had screens that were bulky CRT units and has moved into the thin LED backlit LCD market in force today.

NEC has announced along with its birthday that it has shipped 40 million MultiSync screens. That is a huge number of computer displays. NEC reminds geeks that bask in 1985 when the brand was born was also the first release of Windows with 1.0 hitting the street.

The high-end processors of the day ran at 16MHz, our smartphones are faster today. It’s always an eye opener when you stand back and think how much technology has changed over the years.

Real Tron Lightcycle Still Available

Way back at the end of June some really awesome and street legal full replicas of the Tron Lightcycles from the new flick surfaced on eBay. At the time, the things were going for $35,000 each and there were five up for sale. It seems only one of the bikes sold at $35,000 on eBay.

The other four bikes are still available and the price has gone up to $55,000 each. If you still want one you can get one of them now and a video of the thing being ridden has surfaced along with the bikes. I can say from watching the video that not only does the music suck, but the sound from the V-Twin engine used is all wrong for the thing.

The bikes also look like they are very hard to ride despite being street legal. It appears that the bike won't lean very far. Maybe it’s just the video. I still want one and I am going to buy a lottery ticket right now. If I win, I want the one with the hot chick on it.

OpenFeint Releases Social Gaming SDK OFX To Developers With $1 Million Competition

Today OpenFeint released their new SDK OFX to all developers and has announced a $1 million free-to-play mobile games competition to launch it.

The OFX that’s been in development since earlier in the year allows developers to create Zynga-like free-to-play games including microtransactions and virtual goods. There is also a premium service for developers to use a cloud-based system to build and run a full virtual goods store, access detailed analytics, and include game-specific currency wallets.

The good news is that OFX is completely free for game developers to download and create their games. The only shares in revenue are earned from the sale of paid download able content in games sold with OFX.

The OFX Freemium Challenge waives the revenue share on the OPX SDK for up to $10,000 per developer, available to the first 100 developers who use it. So developers can implement the publicly launched OFX and sell up to $10,000 in download able content in game before sharing any revenue.

OpenFeint is hoping that in-game purchases will attract game developers and if reports by Juniper Research are correct in-game purchases are expected to surpass $11 billion by 2015. So don’t delay.

iOS 4.2 Supports NCFD Technology To Reduce Network Congestion

Nokia Siemens have announced that the new iOS 4.2 does support its Network Controlled Fast Dormancy (NCFD)technology thats has been developed by Nokia Siemens Networks.

The NCFD technology is designed to keep smartphone’s in a state of ”intermediate state” readiness rather than alternating between idle and always active on the network.

When in the intermediate state iOS devices can spring into action much quicker and conserve battery life in the process and when not is use. The NCFD technology also reduces the amount of signals needed to start the data transfer betwen the iOS device and the networks allowing for a much quicker connection speed.

Nokia Siemens has not divulged how they have tested the iOS device to identify that the iOS 4.2 does contain NCFD, nor has it been revealed to the extent that NCFD has been implemented on the AT&T network.However hopefully the end result is a faster connection for any one using an iOS device eventually.

Rovio Mobile has just released the Christmas version of their Angry Birds game for Google Android smartphones, called Angry Birds seasons, and it is now available to download from the Android Market.

The new Angry Birds seasons game comes with 25 new levels, and it is available as a free upgrade to the Halloween edition if you have already purchased it.

It should also land on the iPhone, and iPad shortly, as soon as we get some more information on when it will be available on Apple’s iOS devices we will let you guys know.

Apple iOS Now Top US Smartphone OS

According to research firm Nielsen, Apple overtook RIM in October, and is now the most popular smartphone OS in the US, with a 27.9 percent share of the smartphone market.

This compares to a 27.4 percent for RIM who are now in second place, and a 22.7 percent share for Google’s Android OS, with Window Mobile in fourth place with a 14 percent share

Followed by Symbian OS with a 3.4 percent share, Linux with a 3.3 percent share and Palm’s webOS which has a 1.3 percent share. Both RIM and Apple have continued to lose ground to Google’s Android OS who are up from 19% percent the previous month to 22.7 percent in October.

Yamaha has today launched a new docking station the Yamaha TSX-140 for iPhones and iPods that is equipped with an intellialarm system designed to wake you gentle with the music of your choice.

The alarm system firstly filters out the uncomfortable high frequencies from the music and then gradually restores the full audio spectrum before finally resorting to a beeping sound to make sure you really are definitely awake.

Its equipped with a pair of 3.5-inch ported bass reflex speakers and while your iPhone or iPod is docked in the TSX-140 you can sync via iTunes on your computer through an included mini-B connector.

The design and colours of the docking alarm have been inspired by natural colors and ceramic finishes and its available in either, black, brick or gray. When it starts shipping expect to pay around $399.

Opera Hits 150 Million Users

If you head on over to the Opera website today, what you will see is the inbox of the companies VP of communications Tor Orland, you can browse the inbox and see what messages have been received.

If you look at the top message, you will see the following ‘The PR-team is currently out of office celebrating Opera reaching 150 million users!’, which means that Opera now has over 150 million users.

Back in April this year Opera announced that they had a total of 100 million users worldwide, so it has taken then just 7 months to reach 150 million users which is pretty impressive.

Head on over to the Opera website to check out the message, make sure you check out some of the other ones, which are quite funny.

iPad Closing In On Kindle eReader Market Share

Recent reports show that Apple’s iPad is closing the gap between it and Amazon’s Kindle device in eReader market share. The latest survey from ChangeWave including a sample of 2,800 consumers shows that the Amazon Kindle is 47 percent nearly 15pts over the Apple iPad which is 32 percent up 16pts. See the graphs after the break.

However the iPads market share of the whole market has doubled since ChangeWave surveyed e-Reader owners back in August.

Even thought there are other eReaders available on the market it is now looking more and more like a two horse race between Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle. But the difference between to the two devices will also make consumers lean one way or the other. With Kindle owners more likely to read books on their device 93 percent than iPad owners 76 percent.

We have featrured the Parrot AR.Drone before here at Geeky Gadgets, as a reminder the PArrot AR.Drobe is a fun quadracopter , we recently saw the cool iPhone augmented reality game for it.

As soon as a new gadget is released the guys over at iFixit usually take it apart to see what is inside, normally it is Apple products but they have decided to take the Parrot AR.Drone apart to see what is inside.

The AR.Drone is earth-shattering. It has blown away every drone expert we’ve talked to. It’s not just a toy: it’s a phenomenal piece of engineering that manages to solve some very difficult software problems in order to take flight.

Elecom 4 Slot Mini SD Reader

Elecom have created a small 4 slot SD card reader that it hopes to start shipping in the next few weeks. The small cube card reader is compatible with SD, microSD, microSDHC, miniSD Card and will allow you to insert cards up to 65GB in capacity. It can then let you to dock four SD cards together and transfer data between them or backup to all of them at once.

The tiny card reader measuring just 36.0 x 36.0 x 38.5mm is powered by a detachable USB 2.0 cable that is capable of providing transfer speeds of up to 480 mbps.

The Elecom 4 Slot Mini SD Reader is currently only available to pre-order at the moment for $47 from the Geek Stuff website.

The Apple iPad has been a great success for Apple amongst consumers, but one thing Apple has been hoping for is that business customers will start using the iPad as a business tool.

It seems that this is about to happen as Business Insider is reporting that JPMorgan will be giving out Apple iPad’s to its investment bankers.

Businesses have traditionally used mobile devices for things like email and messaging, with devices like the BlackBerry being popular amongst business users.

If Apple are able to convince enough business customers to start using the iPad, and maybe also the iPhone it certainly could have a large impact on their sales, and keep iPad sales ahead of rival tablet makers for some time to come.

Reeder Arrives On Mac OS X In Beta

Reeder the fantastic iOS feedreader application is now available in a Beta release on Mac OS X. Even in its basic Beta release Reeder can still sync with your existing Google Reader account to import feeds for your to view.

The developers are still working on the application and have already said they are looking to add support for feed management, searching and downloads in the next releases.

Together with other features yet to be disclosed. Lets hope they make as good a job on the Mac OS X version have they have done on the iOS apps. From first impressions they are definitely on track.

Apple has been granted a number of new patents relating to multiple touch and a convertible MacBook and tablet like device, which you can see in the diagram below.

Apple has called the device listed in the patent a “convertible MacBook to iPad like device, and as you can see from the diagram below it features a physical keyboard and would function like a MacBook, but also the screen can be adjusted to make it work in a similar way to an iPad.

This certainly looks very interesting, and could end up being a really popular product for Apple, all the benefits of a MacBook and the iPad in one device.

Archos Android Tablets Get Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Acrhos has updated its range of Android tablets to the latest version of Google’s Android OS, Android 2.2 Froyo. Android 2.2 brings a range of new features and enhancements to the Archos tablets.

Some of the new features added include up to five times faster apps, better support for Microsoft Exchange, the ability to install apps on the microSD card and support for external Bluetooth receivers.

Got Burned? How About Stem Cell Spray?

Long the stuff of sci-fi speculation, recent breakthroughs in stem cell research have now led to a full-fledged skin spray that can heal severe tissue damage.

Alas, the test product underwent a successful demo at the University of Utah, where doctors at its Burn Care Center successfully applied the solution to an ailing diabetes patient’s minor foot burn. Cardiothoracic Surgeon Amit Patel and Dr. Amelia Cochran were pleased with the result given the patient/subject history: Due to her diabetes, the woman with the foot burn suffered for several days as the wound refused to heal. The stem cell solution changed all that.

A combination of recovered red blood cells, platelets, progenitor cells, calcium, and thrombin, the result is a spray whose application rapidly accelerates tissue growth. The initial success at the U. of Utah bodes well for the envisaged future of regenerative skin. If Dr. Patel and Dr. Cochan can perfect their treatment, then massive injuries may soon be treated better, with minimal risk of infection, using their radical new spray.

Such encouraging results does inspire visions of a time just a few years down the road where injured or burnt skin can be treated with a bottle of spray or a patch of grown skin. That’s pretty cool, in our opinion.

Steampunk Steam Powered Turntable (video)

If you are a fan of Steampunk creations then this Steampunk Turntable will definitely bring a smile to your face. The creation was built by Simon Jansen of Auckland, New Zealand.

It was built due to Simon’s desire to listen to an old Sex Pistols LP he had and comes complete with steam whistle. Watch the video after the break to see the boiler fired up and the pistons in action.

It definitely can’t be called the quietest or most practical turntable every produced but as far as creativity goes its definitely up there at the top and has to be the only steam powered turntable ever produced. Watch out for the Rick steam rolled.

Samsung Shows Off Super PLS LCD Displays

Samsung has revealed details of a new LCD the company has been working on, the Super PLS LCD display, which is designed to replace IPS displays.

According to Samsung the new Super PLS technology provides a great viewing angle in LCD display, and it seems the improvement is as much as 100 percent overt IPS displays.

Of course the technology is in the early stages at the moment, with Samsung announcing that they can currently produce display up to a WXGA resolution (1366 x 768), although Samsung has said that they will begin mass production of these new displays in early 2011.

BlueAnt Q2 Platinum Headset

BlueAnt has just added a new headset to their range of wireless Bluetooth products, named the BlueAnt Q2. The new headset comes equipped with the new fully integrated text-to-speech feature.

Its other features include caller name announce, that will notify you of the name of any incoming caller from a database of up to 2,000 mobile phone contacts. Check out the promo video after the break.

The BlueAnt Q2 is also fitted with Wind Armour Technology, reported by BlueAnt as the "most advanced noise cancellation on the market" which BlueAnt say is twice the industry average.

The headset also has professionally sculpted and precision-tuned sound and integrated with Microsoft's Bing 411 service for accessing : stock quotes, movie information, weather, sports, news and traffic reports to name a few.

The Phonofone III just like the Phonofone II will allow you to amplify your iPhone music collection to 60dB without the need to plug the Phonofone III into any power outlet.

The Phonofone is a passive amplifier crafted from ceramic and designed for the iPhone, taking the tunes emitted from the iPhone internal speaker and amplifying them 4 x to the 60dB. Its compatible was first generation iPhones, 3G and 4G.

PlayStation Phone Appears On Video

We have seen quite a few unannounced smartphone appearing on video and in photos this week, earlier today we had a video of the new LG Star, then some photos of the Motorola Olympus, and now we have a video of the new PlayStation Phone.

The video below shows the Sony PSP Phone in action, albeit the video is a little blurry, but you get an brief idea of what the smartphone is going to be like.

Play Starcraft 2 On Your iPad

Fancy playing the new Starcraft 2 game on your iPad? A small program called iSwifter that would normally stream small flash games through the cloud to your iPad has been modified to play Starcraft 2.

The custom version of Starcraft 2 is now equipped with buttons down either side to control your troops, together with the touch screen options of pinching and dragging to move units.

Unfortunately there are no details as to when or even if the modified application will be added to the iTune App Store. But if you do fancy getting Starcraft 2 on your iPad, it might be worth looking at a number of the remote access apps available such as Logmein. These will allow you to run Starcraft 2 on your main PC but access it through your iPad.

I haven’t tried it as yet but will give it a go later to see if it will work. If you give it a go let me know. You can check out a video of the modified iSwifter app running Starcraft 2 over on the Kotaku website.

This Minimalist Jetson Travel Guitar Lets You Rock Anywhere

Guitar purists beware, for Dan Mapp has just built what is perhaps the most convenient marriage between economics and ergonomics involving the beloved six-string.

Dubbed the Jetson, the aesthetic marvel on display above is an electric guitar shaved of unnecessary heft and artfully reduced to its most tasteful minimalist extreme. See the 100% aluminum foldable neck, which extends only half the length of a regular axe, sans frets.

But the ultimate novelty of the Jetson is the just-mentioned neck that’s foldable. Ergo, you don’t need to suffer the burden of a cumbersome guitar case while travelling, just fold this baby in half and presto. Of course, this foldability does have a catch: you have to detune the strings with three turns (or more) of the knobs at the head before the neck can do a 180 and fit snug underneath the body.

Alas, an additional drawback is the guitar’s tone. Since the strings run across the length of an aluminum neck, the material does produce a unique twang that may upset serious guitar aficionados. Still, this Master’s degree project (yes, Mapp is but a humble student but he’s already showing design promise) does look attractive enough to be marketed.

Besides, the traditional electric guitar is long overdue a revision, with even the flashiest Flying V’s today mere reflections of almost 30 year old designs. More power to Dave, then.

Tiny Vibration Generator May Replace Button Batteries

Toshiyuki Ueno a Japanese University researcher has developed a tiny vibration generator with the energy density twenty times hire than normal small vibration driven generators.

The energy density of the new vibration generator is about 22mW/cm³ which is enough to replace a button battery says Ueno.

To create the generator, Ueno used a magnetostrictive material called “Galfenol” (Fe_81.4Ga_18.6). An alloy of iron (Fe) and gallium (Ga) and has a large magnetostriction effect.

The Magnetostriction effect is a phenomenon in which the shape of an object changes due to magnetization. In the case of Galfenol**, its magnetostriction effect is about 300ppm. As an example a 1km-long bar would extend by about 300mm in comparison.

**Galfenol was first developed by the US Navy Research Labs back in 1998 but this is the first application to date of its being used in vibration generators.

The developments in creating the new vibration generator will hopefully mean that some devices will be able to be powered without the need for button batteries in the near future.

Angry Birds Hits 7 Million Downloads On Android

It seems it is not just Apple fans who love Rovio Mobile’s Angry Birds game, as the game has now hit a new milestone on Google’s Android platform, with a total of 7 million downloads on Android devices.

We previously heard that Angry Birds has hit over 10 million downloads on Apple’s iOS platform, and now another 7 million downloads on Android means that it probably wont be long before the company hits 20 million downloads on mobile platforms.

This would make Angry Birds one of the most popular mobile games ever, and I am number will increase between now and Christmas as the company is releasing a Christmas version of the game.

Google Editions Electronic Book Store To Launch Before The End Of 2010?

It has been quite some time since we heard anything about Google Editions, which is Google’s electronic book store, in fact the last time we heard anything about it was in May of this year.

Back in May, Google Editions was tipped to launch some time in the summer of 2010, this didn’t happen and now it seems Google Editions may finally launch some time before the end of the year.

Now according to Google’s product management director, Scott Dougall, Google Editions will launch in the US before the end of the year and in the rest of the world early in 2011.

It will be interesting to see if Google Editions becomes a popular alternative to other electronic book stores like Amazon, and also Apple’s growing library of iBooks.

Logitech Revue Box Receives A Revamped Netflix Interface (video)

Reports are circulating that Logitech is rolling out a much needed update for its Revue Box which will include a new and revamped Netflix interface.

Logitech’s Revue was the first Google TV device to be launched but has always been let down by its basic Netflix application, that only allows the simplest of functions to be carried out.

The new update will remedy that providing a more rounded and fully functional experience through the Netflix application. Its similar in design to the PS3 interface with advance search features also making your Google TV experience more flexible and usable.

Unfortunately there is no way to force the update on to your Revue as the box is set to update automatically, just a waiting game until your number is called.

Motorola Olympus Android Smartphone Turns Up Again (Photos)

We have already seen some leaked photos of the Motorola Olympus Android smartphone, which is reported to come with a Tegra 2 processor, now the guys over at Gizmodo have managed to get their hands on some decent photos of this new Android handset form Motorola.

Apparently the photos were sent into Giz by a reader, who purchased the handset at a ‘market’ and it seems to be a developers version or a prototype as it has a built in developers menu.

We still don’t have any confirmation that the Motorola Olympus will come with a Tegra 2 processor, what we do know now is that the screen is larger than a 3.7 inch one it was compared to, so it could be a 4 inch display or larger.

Microsoft Delaying Windows Phone 7 Developer Payments Until Feb 2011?

One thing any company should do when they launch a new mobile platform is keep their developers happy, at the end of the day, if you have no developers designing apps for your platform then there is nothing for users to buy, and the platform won’t be successful.

You would think that Microsoft would be doing everything they can to keep their developers happy, although it seems this is not the case as it is reported that they wont be paying their developers until February 2011.

Some developers have been submitting applications to the Windows Phone 7 marketplace as early as October, so that means they will have to wait almost five months before they receive their first payment from Microsoft.

If you look at it from a developers point of view, which platform would you prefer to develop applications for? One that pays you every month, or one that makes you wait five month before you see any return on your investment.

Panasonic Jungle Edges Closer To Launch

Panasonic’s new Jungle portable gaming device, I first wrote about back in October is now looking ever more likely to make it to market. As Panasonic is now releasing a number of devices to a lucky US testers to put the gaming devices through its paces.

Test candidates where selected from US gamers who had expressed an interest in the device and Panasonic’s U.S.-based unit invited users to test the player via email yesterday.

The Panasonic Jungle is a pocket gaming device aimed specifically for online gaming and MMO games, equipped with a full Qwerty keyboard and gaming buttons.

Panasonic know this device is very gamble and is looking to create a ‘very different’ gaming device. It will be interesting to see how quickly after testing the device will come to market. Manufacturers seems to be announcing new tablets on a regular basis, we have featured quite a few different Android tablets here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is from Coby.

The Coby Kyros MID7015 is designed to be a budget Android tablet, it features a 7 inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, and it comes with Android 2.1.

Other specifications on the Coby Kyros include 4GB of built in storage, plus a microSD card slot, there is also HDMI, which according to Coby is capable of handling Full HD video in 1080p.

LG Star Appears On Video

The LG Star has been popping up all over the place over the last couple of weeks, we first saw it about two weeks ago, and then yesterday we saw some more photos of LG’s flasgship Android smartphone.

Now the guys over at GSM Israel have put together a hands on video of the LG Star, and some of the specifications are now confirmed which include Android 2.2, a HDMI port and and 8 megapixel camera, and a 4 inch display.

It certainly lookes like the LG Star is going to be an interesting Android smartphone, lets hope we get an official announcement from LG soon with some full specifications, pricing and a launch date.

HTC Gratia UK Launching Q1 2011

The HTC Gratia has already gone on sale in some countries in Europe, which include Sweden, and HTC has now confirmed that the HTC Gratia will be available in the UK in quarter one of 2011, so lets hope that’s some time in January.

The HTC Gratia was announced back in October, as a reminder it features a 3.2 inch HVGA touchscreen display, and comes with Android 2.2 Froyo, there is also a 600MHz Qualcomm processor.

The Gratis is a dual band 900/2100 HSPA/WCDMA smartphone, and it also features 802.11 b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, g-sensor, and a microSD card slot.

We still don’t have any details on how much the HTC Gratia will cost when it hits the UK< although it is retailing in Sweden for 399 Euros SIM free, which would mean that it should cost around £335 here in the UK.

Samsung has shown off a new 3D display design, which uses an OLED display, and is foldable, as you can see in the photo below, the display is fitted in the corner of a room.

Samsung has already developed a range of flexible OLED display that we have seen previously, many of them are still in the prototype stage, but this new design from Samsung does give us an idea of what to expect from 3D TVs in the future.

Samsung have said that they could have similar flexible displays available within the next 5 to 10 years, it certainly looks like an interesting idea.

Adobe Releases Flash 10.2 Beta

Adobe has released Flash 10.2 Beta, which is designed to bring a number of new features and enhancements over Flash 10.1, one of the major new features in a new video hardware acceleration, which according to Adobe is designed to ‘dramatically enhanced video playback performance.’

The new video hardware acceleration is designed to reduce processor usage, and also allow higher frame rate, whilst at the same time reducing memory usage.

There are also a number of other feature which include, support for accelerated hardware rendering in IE9, native custom mouse cursors, and support for full screen mode with multiple monitors.

Samsung SCH-R700 Appears At FCC

Some photos of the Samsung SCH-R700 have appeared on the FCC website, along with some details about this new smartphone, which include that it will be a dual band CDMA device with EVDO 3G.

Other specifications are pretty limited, we do know it will feature a built in camera, a touchscreen display, and it looks like it will be headed to either US Cellular or Verizon.

Unfortunately that is it so far as specifications go, it doesn’t seem to be an Android device, as soon as we get some more information we will let you guys know.

Other features on the Viewsonic VPC220T include a 3.06GHz Intel Pentium E6600 processor and NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics with 512MB of video RAM.

There is also 4GB of DDR3 RAM, plus a 320GB hard drive, a DVD burner, a 4 in one card reader, a 1.3 megapixel web camera, HDMI and integrated WiFi.

Airplay Video Streaming Headed To 3rd Party Apps And Safari Next Year

AirPlay is one of the new features that was recently introduced in the iOS 4.2 update, it basically lets you stream video from your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV.

There are a couple of features that we would like to see added to AirPlay, like streaming from 3rd party apps and also video streaming within Safari.

Now it seems that these features will be added next year, according to a recent email a MacRumors reader got from Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs.

Q: Hi, I recently updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad to 4.2. I think my favourite feature is airplay. This is seriously amazing and makes sharing content seamless. I just purchased Apple TV and was wondering are you ever going to make airplay video work for videos in safari and 3rd party apps? I hope to get a response.

A: Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.

We are hoping that Apple will also add some more functions to their Apple TV, the major one is apps, this would totally change the Apple TV, and change it from a gadget that most of us use occasional into one we would use on daily basis.

Silicon Power Unveils Fast E20 SSD

Silicon Power has unveiled a new SSD today called the E20 that has some impressive performance and comes in a variety of storage capacities. The new SSD gets its high performance from the special DRAM cache that it uses to increase the read and write speed.

The DDR2 cache helps the SSD hit read speeds of up to 250MB/s and writes of up to 230MB/s. The SSD is also long lasting thanks to wear leveling algorithms. A Circuit Current Sensor can tell when power to the drive is fluctuating and will take steps to protect your data.

The SSD also supports SMART and TRIM for improved performance. The SSD is offered in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacity. The drive is a 2.5-inch form factor and it measures 100mm x 69.85mm x 9.5mm. Pricing and availability are unknown at this time.

I haven’t worn a watch in years, but the last one I had didn't have numbers on the face. Some days I would have to count the numbers mentally that should have been on the watch face to be able to tell what time it was. It was a huge pain and I was glad to stop using the thing. I can only imagine how long it would take me to tell time on the Tokyoflash Kisai Transit watch.

This watch has 30 and 15 printed on the front, but that isn't where the minutes are displayed. The watch is supposed to look like a city at night, but it looks like a circuit board to me. The green line is the single minutes, the orange line is for minutes in groups of five, and the blue line is for hours.

I could get the hours easy enough since they are where the normal hours would be. The minutes would give me trouble though. The longer the colored lines, the more minutes on the clock. At least the 30 and the 15 marks on the front give you some sort of reference point.

The Raven controller is ergonomically designed to allow comfort even on marathon gaming sessions and with a Lithium-Ion battery that will last up to 25 hours on a full charge you can game all day and night. Check out the video after the jump to see the sales pitch from Nyko.

The Nyko raven is covered in a soft feel surface and connects to your PS3 via USB dongle to allow gameplay from up to 25 ft away.

Configuration setting on the controller allow you to swap buttons and use an "alternate" configuration mode that swaps of the left analog stick and the D-pad.

The Nyko Raven will be priced at $35 when they start to be shipped next summer.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam Launching In December

Electronic Arts has just announced that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam will be available in December, with the PC version available from the 18th of December 2010 and the Xbox 360 version and PS3 version available from the 21st of December 2010.

Comcast Launches A New Video Streaming Toll

Comcast has now started charging Level 3 Communications for delivery of its Netflix streaming movies through Comcasts communications network. As you can imagine Level 3 Communications, a central partner in the Netflix online movie service it not impressed.

Saying Comcast had effectively erected a tollbooth that "threatens the open Internet," and indicated that it would seek government intervention.

Comcast has denied that the clash with Level 3 Communications has anything to do with network neutrality, calling it "a simple commercial dispute."

However as Netflix are in direct competition with Comcasts own steaming media content and the new move goes against the idea of net neutrality, allowing Comcast to favor its own content over that of another provider.

LinkedIn Unveils New Share Button

LinkedIn has today unveiled its new share button to allow publishers an easy way to spread their content via the LinkedIn network. Earlier this year in April LinkedIn launched several new sharing options, to make it easier for users to attach links to status updates, with the ability to re-share links as well as edit and delete posts.

But is there enough space for yet another share button and are the LinkedIn user base avid sharers to make the button work for publishers, when up against already existing buttons from Facebook, Digg, Twitter, StumbleUpon.

LinkedIn has also created a Publishers site as part of the button roll-out and when you click a LinkedIn Share button on a publisher site you'll be asked to login with your LinkedIn account, and then you'll be able to share a URL in your status update box.

Similar to other share buttons the LinkedIn button will also indicate how many people have shared the article. Adding the new LinkedIn button is a simple process simply visit the Publishers page select the options you require and copy the code to your website.

BlackBerry Curve 8980 Appears At The FCC

A yet to be announced handset from RIM, the BlackBerry Curve 8980 has turned up at the FCC, and although we have heard about this BlackBerry smartphone before we now have some more details.

The BlackBerry Curve 8980 seems to be the replacement for the 8900, and it features quad band GSM/EDGE radios as well as 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth.

Other specifications include a 3.2 megapixel camera, a QWERTY keyboard, an optical trackpad and a 3.5mm headphone jack, there are still no details on when the BlackBerry Curve 8980 will be available.

Parrot’s AR.Drone Free Flight Software Now Available On Any iOS Device Device

Originally designed for the iPhone and iPod Touch Parrot’s AR.Drone software Free Flight is now available on the iPad allowing you to take control of your Ar.Drone on any iOS device.

If you have never heard of the AR.Drone its a quadricopter equipped with two cameras, one facing forward the other rear that allows you to then take control of the vehicle and view it as though you are flying it from the cockpit, through your iOS device.

You no longer have to squint at a small iPhone screen you can now take advantage of the iPads beautifully large screen to buzz pedestrians in the park as you fly using the Free Flight application.

Converting the app for the iPad required a few little tweaks including, the video output ratio to be adjusted for the iPad's less wide screen and the controls to be moved much closer to the bottom corners.

If you are lucky enough to have an AR.Drone Free Flight is available as a free download from the App Store.

Eizo have just announced its latest addition to their range of 3D monitors the DuraVision FDF2301-3D which is equipped with Naked-Eye 3D at full resolution.

The new Eizo display is fitted with a directional back light and allows users to view 3D images without the need to wear any fancy 3D glasses.Eizo’s recommended viewing distance for 3D images is 890mm.

The display has the ability to offer a number of 3D viewing modes including Side by Side, Anaglyph, Frame Sequential, and Dual Input.

The DuraVision FDF2301-3D measures 650×261.7×566.3mm and weighs 16kg it will be available in the first half of the 2011 and is expected to be priced around $12,000, so you had better start saving now.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 Froyo Update Coming Today

T-Mobile has announced that they will be rolling out an OTA update for the Samsung Galaxy S today, that will bring Android 2.2 Froyo to the Galaxy S on their network.

T-Mobile is the first network to offer the Galaxy S update over the air, although they have said if there are any problems with the OTA update, they will make the update available as a download from Samsung’s KIES software from tomorrow.

Our goal is to make the update process smoother and we are working to become the only mobile operator offering FOTA (Firmware over the Air) updates for the Samsung product range. The aim was and still is to have the FOTA update available at some point today. If for reasons outwith our control we are unable to have a FOTA update process fully functioning by close of play today, then we will make the update available for download via Samsung KIES tomorrow (Dec 1st).

There are no details as yet on what time the OTA Android 2.2 update for the Samsung Galaxy S will be available, if you get the update on your Galaxy S, leave a comment and let us know.

Sony Announces 4.1 Million PlayStation Move Controllers Sold

Not to be outdone by the earlier news from Microsoft that they had sold 2.5 million Kinect motion controllers for the Xbox 260, Sony has announced that they have sold a total of 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers since launch.

Sony is obviously keen to point out that they have sold more motion controllers for the PS3 than Microsoft has sold for the Xbox 360, but the PS3 Move went on sale back in September whilst Microsoft’s Kinect only went on sale in November.

Also Sony has a bit of an advantage over Microsoft, if more than one player wants to play a game using the Kinect on the Xbox 360, you use the same controller, where as on the PlayStation you will need an extra controller for each player.

Nook Color Gets Rooted, Angry Birds Installed

The Nook Color is designed to be used as an eBook reader, but since its runs Google’s Android OS, the guys over at the XDA decided to root the nook color to see what this $250 Android tablet was capable of.

So what app did they decided to install on the Nook Color, to show it working as a fully fledged Android tablet? Angry Birds of course.

You can find out how they achieved this over at the XDA developers Forum, no doubt we will see many more apps installed and running on the Nook Color in the future.

Payvment Ecommerce Facebook App Secures $6 Million Funding

Payvment a Facebook application that allows Facebook users to easily setup a store and start selling products on Facebook has secured Series B funding to the tune of $6 Million.

The Payvment application was launched in November 2009 and has since attracted more than 40,000 business and Facebook members to sign up. Allowing Payvment to sell to over 500,000 Facebook users in the last 12 months.

Payvment are continually adding new features to the application that is still currently in Beta release at the moment. The last update included the feature to allow retailers to provide instant discounts and gift vouchers to users that become fans or like the fan page.

iPad 2 Camera Supplier Selected?

We are expecting Apple to announce the iPad 2 early in 2011, and have already heard a bunch of rumors about what will be inside the second generation Apple iPad, including the possibility of dual cameras just like the iPhone 4.

Now according to Digitimes, the company who currently makes the cameras for the iPhone 4 has also been awarded the contract to make the cameras for the iPad 2.

Largan Precision has declined to comment on market rumors indicating the company will be the sole lens module supplier for Apple's upcoming iPad 2 tablet with shipments to kick off in the first quarter of 2011, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).

This has yet to be confirmed by either the camera manufacturer or Apple, and we doubt we will hear anything about this from either company.

We are hoping that apple will announced the iPad 2 in January, one of the rumors we suspect that will end up being true is the fact that the iPad 2 will feature dual cameras, as Apple will be looking to integrate their FaceTime video chat into the iPad as it has done with the iPhone 4 and its Mac range of computers.

Today Microsoft has released a new Visual Basic Tools add-on for developers for creating Windows Phone 7 applications. The new add on pack is supported by Visual Studio 2010 Professional, Premium or Ultimate editions and allows Silverlight apps to be created for Windows 7 mobile devices.

Unfortunately the add-on is not supported by Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone or support applications built on Microsoft’s XNA Framework.

The new add-on has the potential to add huge amounts of new applications to the Windows Phone 7 directory of applications as millions of developers use Visual Basic around the world.

Currently Microsoft has only 2,800 application in its Market Place compared to Apple’s 300,000 applications. Together with the poor initial sales of Microsofts new Windows Phone 7 devices Microsoft will be hoping this new wave of development can help it gain more sales and customers.

Google Facing EU Antitrust Enquiry

We told you back in February that the European Comission was looking into Google after a number of complaints from a range of companies who claimed that Google wasn’t ranking its competitors fairly in its search results.

The original complaint came from a number of companies which included Foundem, a vertical search engine, a French legal search engine called ejustice.fr, and finally Microsoft's Ciao from Bing.

Its seems that Google will now face a formal investigation into the allegations, so the European Commission must have found something which they think warrants a formal investigation in their initial enquiries.

The last company to get on the wrong side of the European Commission was Intel, who ended up having to pay a fine of $1.45 billion, and if the EU finds Google guilty of any wrong doing the fine could be larger as the regulator is capable of making a company up to 10 percent of their revenue.

Cybercriminal Hacks Columbia U. Account, Steals Millions

So the story goes this George Castro guy who may or may not be an employee of Columbia U. finds a loophole in the school’s accounts-payable system. He then wasted no time setting up a dummy account in his name, thus allowing him to siphon $4 million in just two months.

What’s funny is he claims the dough just appeared in his bank account one day, all mysterious and such.

Too bad that like 99% of greedy people George’s eyes were too fixated on the instant moolah to cover his trail. What happens next is—around the time he plopped down $80,000 for an Audi police found in his driveway—the University of Columbia noticed the “error” and alerts the police. It won't require a lot of brain cells to predict what happened next.

Further evidence that Mr. Castro never read “Graft And Thievery For Dummies” is he was arrested by the coppers at his crib with a bag carrying $200,000 in cash. Who knows? He might have been on his way to Taco Bell for lunch and needed small bills. (Of course, we’re kidding here.)

George Castro is being held on $2 million bail at the moment. More than one commenter on this news piece suggested that he should have left the country once he scored the big bucks. His bad.

Acer Working On Windows Phone 7 Smartphones

Acer certainly has been launching some interesting smartphones recently, we previously saw the new 4.8 inch Android smartphone from the company, and now they have announced that they will also be releasing a range of Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

Acer’s CEO Gianfranco Lanci mentioned in a recent interview with Mobilized that the company intends to launch Windows Phone 7 devices, although there are no details as yet on when they will hit the market.

We saw a lot of limitations on Windows Phone a couple of years ago and we moved to Android because of user experience, and even the possibility to be a little more creative from a content offering and so forth is better than on the Windows phone. If we look at Windows Phone 7, today, I think we see the same opportunity you can see on Android in terms of customization.

Windows Phone 7 is certainly being embraced by smartphone manufacturers, a lot more than the previous version of Windows Mobile was, and with the recent rumors of a major Windows Phone 7 update coming in January, we can expect to see a lot more Windows Phone 7 smartphones in 2011.

The Cowon 3D PMP provides full 1080p video playback and has a HDMI output can can take up to 64GB of flash storage to hold all your media.

On a full charge the Cowon 3D can provide up to 10 hours of video playback or 45hours of audio, which should be enough for even the longest trips. Additional it has 300 hours of standby and Wifi support.

The Cowon 3D PMP will be arriving on December 10th in South Korea, starting at $431 for the 32GB-equipped 3D PMP and $509 for the 64GB model.

Google To Pay $6 Billion For Groupon?

Yesterday we told you about the possible purchase of Groupon by Google, it was rumored yesterday that Google will pay around $2.5 billion for Groupon, although it seems now that Google will pay more than double what was originally though.

According to Kara Swisher from All Things Digital, Google is rumored to be paying a total of $6 billion for Groupon, with $5.3 billion up front and $700 million as an earn out payment, in a bid to keep the companies existing employees.

Groupon would be a great acquisition for Google and would enable the company to integrate the Groupon services into their local business directory Google Places.

Designer Adika Titut Triyugo has come up with a innovative design concept to help with your household chores, the Foki Vacuum footwear.

The idea behind the design allows you to do multiple tasks at once. i.e. simply slip on the shoes and while moving around your home you are hoovering the floor removing bacteria and tiny dust leaving your hands free to complete other tasks.

Each shoe is a rechargeable rubber-lined plastic cleaning slipper equipped with two rotary cleaners i that picks up the dust and bacteria as you move.

Indicators on top of the shoes show how much dirt you have collected and when they need to be emptied, together with a battery life status light.

The concept has been entered into the design competition “Seoul Design Fair, Design For All 2010″

Softbank Japan Offering Free iPad On 2 Year Contract

We have already heard that a number of mobile operators here in the UK are offering subsidised iPads, the cheapest ones being about £199 with a 2 year contract.

Now Softbank Japan is offering free iPads to customers who sign up to a 24 month contract for 3G data, and $56 a month will get you a 16GB iPad with nothing up front.

A 32GB iPad with Softbak Japan will cost you $61 a month, whilst a 64GB will cost you $66 a month, and the subsidixed iPads will be available in Japan from this Friday.

With the UK and Japan offering subsidised iPads, I wonder how long it will be before we start to see mobile operators in the US offering similar deals.

CrApple Store Blog Shuts Down

Remember the CrApple Blog from a few days back? It’s gone, folks.

Apparently, word of the rant-driven enterprise spread across online news outlets over the weekend, prompting a viewer surge that eventually nailed the coffin shut on CrApple blogger. Though the exact reason (as in who threatened to sue) why the blog has been stopped is unclear, the CrApple blogger has left a parting message on the page where he/she previously published punctilious posts (sorry for the alliteration) that tore Apple retail a new one.

Here’s a sample lifted from the goodbye post’s introduction:

“Wow, that was totally unexpected. As most readers will be aware, the site did the rounds on all the Mac blogs etc at the weekend, with the result being a large increase in traffic. The thing about this blog is that it was never really meant to be read by the whole world, it was a place for fed up employees to read the sufferings of another fed up employee, and laugh about all the little things that begin to tick you off whilst working at Apple.”

If you read the original CrApple Store blog there’s a remarkable difference in the tone of those incendiary fusillades compared to the calm wording of this November 29 adieu.

The anonymous writer also shares that he/she has quit Apple and carefully explains what exactly is wrong with Steve Jobs company, at least when it comes to the retail side. What’s strange is the lucidity of his/her observations are a stark contrast to the earlier venom. Still, the blog itself was indeed useful for a coupla laughs.

Dell Vostro V130 Notebook Features New Intel Cooling Technology

Dell has launched the Dell Vostro V130 which is one of the first notebooks to feature Intel’s new cooling technology, Hyperbaric cooling, which works by drawing air into the notebook via an internal fan.

The majority of notebooks have fans built in which push the air our of the computer, rather than draw it in, and this new technology channels the air to specific components inside the notebook like the CPU.

“By using cold air directly from the outside and then directly blowing across the hot components, you create a more efficient cooling solution. This is because by blowing air across the components, you create more intense convective cooling and often get more cooling flow through the platform,”

The Dell Vostro V130 is designed to be used by business users, it features a 13.3 inch LCD display, and uses an ultra low voltage Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, there is also a six cell battery.

Other specifications on the Dell Vostro V130 include 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 640GB hard drive, HDMI, integrated 802.11n WiFi, a 5 in one card reader, a built in web camera and optional WiMax and 3G modems.

The Dell Vostro V130 is available now from Dell, with prices starting at $429.

Acer Liquid Metal Headed To AT&T And T-Mobile?

Acer officially announced the Liquid Metal Android smartphone at the end of October, and said that their latest Android smartphone would be available in the UK in December.

Now it seems that the Acer Liquid Metal is also headed to the US, and will possibly be available with US networks AT&T and T-Mobile, as both networks are currently considering stocking this new Android smartphone.

As a reminder, the Acer Liquid Metal will come with Android 2.2, Froyo, and featyures a 3.6 inch touchscreen display, plus there is also an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor and a five megapixel camera.

The five megapixel camera has a number of features which include image stabilization, and it is also capable of recording HD video in 720p, there is also integrate 802.11n WiFi, DLNA and uPnP.

There are no details as yet on when the Acer Liquid Metal will be available with either AT&T or T-Mobile in the US, as soon as we get some more information we will let you guys know.

LG Star Android Smartphone, More Photos Leaked

Some of our readers will remember the LG Star Android smartphone that was leaked a couple of weeks ago, now the guys over at Phandroid have managed to get their hands on some more photos of the LG Star, which is reported to be LG’s flagship Android smartphone.

What we know so far about the LG Star is that it will feature a dual core Tegra 2 processor, plus an eight megapixel camera that will be capable or recording full HD video in 1080p.

The guys over at Phandroid have also found out that the LG Star comes with a HDMI out port, there is also reported to be a front facing camera for video chat and a microSD card slot.

Microsoft Sells 2.5 Million Kinect’s For Xbox 360

Microsoft announced earlier in the month that they had sold 1 million of their Kinect gaming add on for the Xbox 360 on its first day, and now it seems that sales of the Xbox 360 motion controller have been strong since launch day.

Microsoft has just announced that they have sold a total of 2.5 million Kinect’s, in the first 25 days since it went on sale, and the company has said that it is on target to sell 5 million Kinect devices by the end of the year.

Both the sales of the Sony PlayStation Move controller and Microsoft’s Kinect have been good since they both went on sale recently, and it will be interesting to see which one comes out on top by the end of 2010.

Microsoft’s Don Mattrick, president of the companies Interactive Entertainment Business had the following to say about the Kinect sales.

“We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand,”

With the Microsoft Kinect and the PlayStation Move both becoming popular, it will be interesting to see what effect these motion controllers have had on the sales of Nintendo Wii consoles.

Richard Bransons Project iPad Magazine Goes Live In The App Store

We told you yesterday that Richard Branson’s, iPad only magazine, called Project would be launching this week, it is now live in the Apple App store and the app is available as a free download.

Within the app you can purchase editions of the magazine, the first issue is now available for £1.79 of $2.99, and as well as the magazine, the app also gives you access to the Project Blog.

We have had a brief play with the app, and checked out the first edition of the Project Magazine, it certainly is very slick with lots of interactive content, and pretty much works in a similar way to other magazine apps we have seen on the iPad before.

There are a couple of nice features in it, for exmaple when you head to the Jeff Bridges article on Tron, he walks accross the iPad screen at the top of the article.

Richard Branson’s Project Magazine for the iPad looks pretty interesting, we have only had a brief chance to read it so far, you can download the app from the iTunes app store for free, the magazine is available to preview before you buy an issue.

Nokia N00 Prototype Turns Up On Ebay

A Nokia prototype has turned up on Ebay, and according to the guys over at Pocket Now, it may the the upcoming N87 handset, from the looks of the photos, it looks very similar to the Nokia N86 or N96 models.

The only information given about the phone on the auction listing is the Nokia N00, which is a placeholder number used for prototypes.

It looks like this mystery Nokia handset features a 12 megapixel camera with a Xenon flash, there is also a pop out kickstand.

Apple Forces PhotoFast To Stop Selling 256GB MacBook Air SSDs

Just after the new MacBook Air was launched, a company called PhotoFast launched a 256GB SSD upgrade kit for the MacBook Air, the company has been asked by Apple to stop selling the upgrade kits.

The PhotoFast SSD upgrade kits for the MacBook Air were actually faster than the original SSDs inside the MacBook Air, with read and write speeds of 250MB/s as opposed to 150MB/s of the original ones sold within the MacBook Air.

The compnay has complied with Apple’s wishes and have stopped selling the product, according to Apple Insider the reason they have done this as they are actually an authorised Apple accessory maker, so they obviously didn’t want to upset Apple.

It isn’t clear whether these upgraded SSD kits for the MacBook Air will be available in the future, as soon as we get some more information we will let you guys know.

Microsoft Releasing Major Windows Phone 7 Update In January?

According to Chris Walsh, the guy who created the ChevronWP7 hack, Microsoft has something big planned for Windows Phone 7 in January, and it looks like Windows Phone 7 may get its first major update since the new OS was launched.

If the rumor is true, then Microsoft will be adding a range of new functions to Windows Phone 7, which include multi-tasking, copy and paste, support for custom ring tones and Bing turn by turn directions.

According to Chris Walsh, the update to Windows Phone 7 is so major, Microsoft could have called it Windows Phone 7, “MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years” and “Lets just say the could have called it Windows Phone 8″

It will be interesting to see if the rumor turns out to be true, and if Microsoft are able to release major updates to the platform on a regular basis it could help Windows Phone 7 gain popularity.

Google has updated its Google Earth, the new version is Google Earth 6 and it brings a range of new features and enhancements to Google Earth.

Google Earth 6 now features integrated Street Views, and also Google has now included 3D trees in the latest version, which have been added to the 3D models.

The major focus of this release is focused on the “Ground-Level View”. As you approach the ground, Google Earth 6 will automatically shift you into Ground-Level mode, which provides a great way for you to browse around while anchored to the ground.

Richard Bransons Project iPad Magazine To Launch This Week?

Earlier today we told you that News Corp’s The Daily iPad only publication may be delayed until next year, now it seems that Sir Richard Branson intends to launch his new digital publication this week, and he has already launched a blog for the digital only magazine called ‘Project’.

As you can see in the photo below, the Project iPad magazine from Richard Branson and Virgin Digital Publishing, is shown as available from the App store, there is even a link to iTunes, although nothing exists at the link as yet.

Virgin Digitial publishing had the following to say about the new publication,which is expected to go on sale at the iTunes store this week

‘Project is what we like to think of as a 'living magazine' – evolving and updating throughout the month and taking advantage of the iPad's capabilities to deliver a really innovative reader experience. Unlike a regular magazine you won't just read Project once and then forget about it. The idea is that Project will be something that readers treat as a daily destination, offering breaking news, reader polls and blogs.’

Clear has announced that its 4G WiMax service has launched today in LA. The service offers wireless data speeds about four times faster than the speeds that 3G service operates at. With the service hitting LA, Clear now covers about 11 million people in the LA and Orange County area.

The blazing fast 4G speed should be a great way for geeks to find some good deals on gadgets and gear since today is Cyber Monday. New subscribers can also get a deal on signing up for new service that runs through midnight tonight.

The deal is apparently for all customers in any Clear service area, not just for LA. You can get the Clear Spot 4G connectivity device for only $20. Aliens Pulse Rifle Replica from ThinkGeek is a Christmas Dream

If you are anything like me, you will need to read this quickly and then head off to eBay to sell off some of your junk so you can buy one. ThinkGeek has unveiled a replica of the prop rifle from the Aliens flick. You remember the pulse rifle the gang used in the movie.

The ThinkGeek rifle is a 100% authentic replica of the movie weapon down to the size and color of the brown shrouds and the under barrel grenade launcher. That launcher has a handle that actually moves and the entire replica weapon weighs 15 pounds. The thing is not a plastic toy.

The side of the rifle has a red LED counter just as the movie weapon did. Each time you eject the magazine and reinsert it resets the counter to 95. The clip holds the pair of AA batteries that power the display. I’m not sure if the counter actually works and counts down each time the trigger is pulled or not. It comes with a wall rack and you can own one for $899.99. Awesome isn’t cheap.

Dynamic Eye Sunglasses Block Rays Wherever You Look

How every much you pay for your sunglasses looking in the direction of the sun always causes problems with extra glare, until now. A new development in sunglasses created by Chris Mullin called the Dynamic Eye Sunglasses uses a LCD display to selectively darken the area in your field of view where there's a glare. As in the image below.

The image on the bottom left shows what you would see without the new technology and the bottom image on the right show how the new LCD sunglasses can dramatically enhance the visual effect.

The changes all happen automatically and faster than the blink of an eye, and even moving your head will not affect your view as the glasses react to the new sun position and adjust relative to it.

Chris is hoping to get the project rolling and started a Kickstarter hoping to raise $20,000 by the middle of January to proceed with development.

Microsoft To Launch New TV Service?

According to Reuters, Microsoft is currently talking to a number of different media companies in a bid to launch a new online pay TV service.

It seems the pay TV service could be launched through Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, and also possibly online through Microsoft’s Windows OS.

Reuters are reporting that Microsoft are hoping to create a ‘virtual cable service’, which would be delivered to users over the Internet. It is possible that it may be about 12 months before we see the new service launch. If Microsoft manage to secure deals with all the major TV companies, they could end up having a very popular service.

Google recently launched their Google TV service, but didn’t come to agreement with any of the major TV networks for online TV, this has led to a number of the networks block Google TV devices from accessing their online TV content.

A new ePrivacy App scam is currently making the rounds on Facebook and promises that by installing the ePrivacy application users of Facebook will then be able to view who checked your profile.

Unfortunately for anyone who has installed the ePrivacy application it allows the scammers to take control of your account and help spread the malware even further, says Sophos.

Already over 60,000 users have fallen victim to the scam which is still spreading through Facebook. Onceyou have been infected the app starts posting on your wall with a link.

"OMG OMG OMG… I cant believe this actually works! Now you can see who viewed your profile"

iOS 4.3, The Daily iPad Magazine And iTunes Subscriptions Delayed Until Next Year?

We have head previously that Rupert Murdoch and News Corp intend to launch a new iPad only magazine called The Daily, we also heard that Apple may be launching a new in app subscription service for these types of apps, and that the update would come in iOS 4.3.

We were previously told that Apple would announce these new subscription publications, along with iOS 4.3 in December, but now it turns out, according to the guys over at Cult of Mac that this may be delayed until next year.

When we first heard that Apple were going to release iOS 4.3 in December, we did think it was a little ambitious so soon after the release of iOS 4.2.1 which we only had recently.

Who knows maybe Apple will still announce the new subscription publications, which both Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch are tipped to be launching their own publications, but we might not see iOS 4.3 released until early next year.

Splinter Cell 6 Confirmed By Ubisoft

Ubisoft has confirmed that they are indeed creating a new Splinter Cell 6 game. The confirmation came from Jade Raymond herself in a new promotional video released yesterday.

Jade explained that the complete development of the game will be carried out entirely in Toronto. Where Ubisoft currently have 83 people working on the project including concept artists, animators and audio directors.

“Within the next 10 years we plan to ramp up this studio to at least 800 people, and we’re ahead of schedule on that,” Jade explains in the video.

Jade’s former employers include SOE and EA and the new Splinter Cell 6 game will be her first outside of the Assassin's Creed series that Raymond has worked on at Ubisoft.

We have featured a few different motorized skateboards here at Geeky Gadgets, but this might just be the worlds fastest one, it certainly is the worlds most powerful skateboard and it is built by V8 Supercars in Australia.

The V8 Skateboard is being built for Tony Hawk, and as the name suggests it is actually powered by a V8 engine, and comes with a total of 630 horsepower, you can see it in action in the video below.

The V8 Skateboard will be shown off in Sydney from the 3rd to 5th of December, and the builders of the skateboard are hoping that Tony Hawk will take it for a ride.

Apple Bans Android Magazine App

Apple is well know for taking measures to ban certain applications from its App Store to keep the spam apps at bay. But a the recent banning of an Android Magazine App from the App Store is a little more curious. Especially after Apple has stated that its application policies its relaxed a little more of late on App’s.

Unfortunately for publisher Mediaprovider their recent Android magazine App has now been banned from the Apple App Store.

Here’s the conversation Dixon of Mediaprovider had with Richard of the Apple App Store team, after their application was rejected.

"So what's the problem?" Dixon asked.

"You know… your magazine," replied the Apple rep, who identified himself only as Richard. "It's just about Android…. we can't have that in our App Store."

Is Apple that concerned about Android even though Apple is not looking for market dominance? What are your thoughts should Apple of banned the Android App?

BendDesk Multi-Touch Concept Desktop (video)

One of the big problems with regards using touch screens in everyday life is the position. They dont allow you to work on a horizontal plain rather than a vertical. The BendDesk concept is hoping to remove that problem and allow people to work with a multi-touch screen in any orientation they like.

Easily moving images and windows of work from one plain to another. Check out the video after the jump to see the concept in action.

The Benddesk is the Media Computing Group vision of merging multitouch with a common physical area. The design uses a ten full touch points and the lower section of the display is also designed to be used as a standard desk, holding your laptop, paperwork and other items might still require.

BendDesk is a research project by Malte Weiss, Simon Voelker, Jan Borchers from the Media Computing Group, and Christine Sutterfrom the Department of Work and Cognitive Psychology. It is funded in part through the German B-IT Foundation.

Apple TV Hacked To Play HTML5 Video

Since Apple started selling the new Apple TV back in October, we have seen a number of different hacks that have added extra functions to the Apple TV, one of those was a fully featured web browser called aTV Flash.

Now another one has appeared, and as you will see in the video below, this latest hack for the new Apple TV uses the previous browser we mentioned above, but it now adds support for HTML5 Video.

Apple recently updated the OS on the Apple TV to 4.1, which has put the release of the aTV Flash back a little, although no doubt the hackers will have found a work around in a short time.

As we can see from the various hacks on the Apple TV, this little set top box from Apple certainly has a lot of potential, in its current state the device is somewhat limited, and Apple could bring lots of functions to it by enabling apps on the Apple TV, I wonder how long it will take them to realise that if they want the Apple TV to be a success it needs a lot more functions.

Apple Offers Cyber Monday Deals On Accessories

Black Friday was a good day for Apple fans, as Apple reduced the price of many of its products including the MacBook, iMac and some of their iPods, now they have listed a range of deals for Cyber Monday for accessories.

Face Me To Bring Video Chat To Facebook With Skype Integration?

We have heard previously that Facebook and Skype could be working together to bring Skype integration and video chat to the world’s largest social network, and now more details have been revealed which point to a new service called Face Me.

Details of the Face Me video chat service were spotted by the guys over at Green Any Site, who found a new object in the Facebook source code, and the object was simply called VideoChat.

The site who found the details has also discovered that Facebook seems to be periodically testing out this new video chat feature. Facebook launched its new messaging system earlier this month, which brought Email, Chat and SMS to the social network, so we guess video chat integration would be the next thing to add to the new service.

New Bungie DLC Noble Map Pack Previews (video)

If you are looking forward to the release of the new Halo download content being released by Bungie tomorrow. The Noble Map DLC consists of three maps: Breakpoint, Tempest and Anchor 9. Check out gameplay demos of the three maps in the videos after the break.

The new Halo Noble Map Pack will be available on Xbox Box Live from the 30th of November, for 800 Microsoft Points.

The new Tempest map is an abandoned shoreline facility that bends both sea and sky to an unnatural cause, but the ground itself has quickly become another all too familiar battlefield.

The new Anchor 9 is a low orbit dry-dock, UNSC craft undergo rapid repair and rearmament in support of the enduring war effort.

The new Breakpoint map is located in the icy lands, the modular archaeological labs were never intended to withstand such a large scale onslaught of Covenant military power, but the information being extracted here may prove vital to humanity's survival.

LaCie have today added a new faster USB 3.0 4 port hub to their range named the Hub4. Allowing you to connect up to four USB 3.0 devices. Just make sure you have a USB 3.o port on your computer to make sure everything will transfer at its maximum possible speed.

The new hub is backward compatible with slower USB 2.o ports if needed, but using USB 3.0 ports you can expect transfer speeds up to 5GB/s. Its case has rounded corners and there are indicator LED’s for each port.

The Hub4 measure just 116 x 71 x 25 mm / 4.6 x 2.8 x 1 in and is compatible with latest version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6 (USB 2.0 only).

Sharp Galapagos Tablets Launching December 10th

The latest company to launch a range of tablets is Sharp, who will launch two different tablets in Japan, and they will be called the Sharp Galapagos tablets.

Unfortunately there are no details on the tablet OS they will be running, although Sharp has released details on the hardware specifications, and there will be a 5.5 inch model and a 10.8 inch model.

The 5.5 inch model will feature a 1024 x 600 resolution touchscreen display, whist the 10.8 inch model will feature a 1366 x 800 pixels resolution display.

Both models will come with a microSD card slot and will also come bundled with an 8GB microSD card, the 5.5 inch model will retail for about $474 whilst the 10.8 inch model will retail for about $653.

There are no details as yet on whether the Sharp Galapagos tablets will be available in the UK, US and Europe.

Gran Turismo 5 Takes UK Chart Top Spot

Gran Turismo 5 has headed straight into the UK gaming charts at the number one spot, knocking Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top of the charts for the first time since it went on sale earlier this month.

Whilst Gran Turismo 5 has is now at the top of the charts, it seems it is only the sixt biggest PS3 launch to date, and around 94 percent of the games sales were from the regular edition of the games with the other 6 percent from collectors editions.

Whether Gran Turismo 5 will be able to keep the top spot until Christmas remains to be seen, who know Call Of Duty: Black Ops may end up taking the top spot back again next week.

An new Android tablet has just gone on sale in Japan, the Malata T2, which comes with the latest version of Google’s Android OS, Android 2.2 Froyo.

Other specifications in the Malata T2 include a 10 inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024 x 600, and an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, plus 1GB of RAM.

The Malata T2 Android tablet also comes with 16GB of built in storage, plus a microSD card slot that can take up to 32GB cards, plus integrated WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 1.3 megapixel camera and support for Adobe Flash 10.1

The Malata T2 is inly available in Japan, for about $592, there are no details as yet if it will be released in the US and Europe.

MDMouse Looks Kooky But Checks Blood Pressure Real Good

Boys and girls, what we have here is a simple case of USB optical mouse plus sphygmomanometer equals MDMouse.

It’s perfect for the 70 million odd grown ups and senior citizens in the United States who are suffering from hypertension. Also perfect for anyone else outside the U.S.A. with hypertension. As indicated by the pic above, the MDMouse allows users to check their blood pressure and have the data emailed to medical professionals. The ring beside the mouse accommodates a digit (we believe your thumb goes in there based on how a person grasps a PC mouse) and tightens accordingly for the right amount of pressure, which registers on a corresponding software program on the PC.

Despite its convenience, doctors still suggest using cuff-style upper arm blood pressure monitors over finger sensors become reading a re a lot more accurate with the former. Still, if computing is a part of your daily routine and hypertension keeps you less than healthy, the MDMouse appears quite the impressive accessory.

The iPhone Dev Team has released a new Ultrasn0w carrier unlock for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, and the unlock with work for both 3G and 3GS owners with a base band later then 05.13.04.

As well as the unlock the iPhone Dev Team has also released a new version of the Redsn0w tool, which works in a similar way to the Pwnage tool.

Today we're pleased to announce our free carrier unlock for iPhone3G/3GS owners with a baseband later than 05.13.04. The unlock for that baseband exploited the AT+XAPP command, thanks to a crash initially discovered by @sherif_hashim (@Oranav also found this crash). So what hole are we exploiting today, since Apple closed that AT+XAPP hole? Well, we're exploiting the exact same hole!

Apple Hires Patent Lawyers For Nokia, Motorola And HTC Lawsuits

Apple is getting ready for its patent battle with Nokia at the International Trade Commission, as it has hired a number of top patent lawyers, to help the company argue it various patent cases with other manufacturers within the smartphone industry.

Both Apple and Nokia are both alleging that each company has infrigneged on the other ones patents for smartphones, and Apple also has similar lawsuits with other smartphone makers including HTC and Motorola.

According to Business Week, Apple is the most sued technology company since 2008, which is the year after Apple introduced the first generation iPhone.

We suspect it will be quite some time before we find out what the outcome of the various lawsuits will be, whatever happens it could end up changing the smartphone industry.

Peter Jackson To Film The Hobbit Using Custom-Built Red Epic Cams

At long last, the beloved prequel to Tolkien’s LOTR is finally getting its own two-part film treatment. Shooting starts next year and Peter Jackson has a batch of 30 new cameras to realize his 3D vision for The Hobbit.

Said cameras are the latest from RED, Jackson’s longtime supplier of cameras. In fact, both RED and Jackson go way back to when the latter was still keeping himself busy with short films. This from the official press release:

“Jackson has a long history with Red, dating back to when he directed the short film ‘Crossing the Line’ as a very early test of prototype RED ONE cameras. ‘I have always liked the look of Red footage…I’m not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats. I find the picture quality appealing and attractive, and with the Epic, Jim and his team have gone even further. It is a fantastic tool, the Epic not only has cutting edge technology, incredible resolution and visual quality, but it is also a very practical tool for film makers. Many competing digital systems require the cameras to be tethered to large cumbersome VTR machines. The Epic gives us back the ability to be totally cable free, even when working in stereo.”

We heard previously that Rovio Mobile would be releasing a Christmas themed version of their Angry Birds game for the Apple iPad and iPhone, now it seems they will be giving their fans a Christmas gift.

Rovio Mobile has announced that if you purchased the Angry Birds Halloween game that you will get a free upgrade to the Angry Birds Christmas game.

If you didn’t buy the Halloween version you will still be able to get the new Angry Birds Christmas game for $0.99, and good news for Android users as the game will also be available on Android as well as Apple’s iOS.

The game is expected to be released shortly, and it will be available from iTunes for $0.99.

Google To Buy Groupon For $2.5 Billion? (Rumor)

According to Vatornews, Google Has just purchased Groupon for $2.5 billion, although the acquisition in unconfirmed by either Google or Groupon at the moment.

There have been rumors over the past few weeks that Google made a bid for Groupon of between two to three billion dollars, so this latest rumor would tie in with the previous ones.

Groupon is becoming increasingly popular, and now has reported revenues of around $50 million a month, and a Google acquisition, could possibly mean that Google could integrate the Groupon services into its local business directory, Google Places.

Latest Microsoft Kinect Hack Controls Super Mario (Video)

We have seen quite a few different hacks for the Microsoft Kinect here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is from the same guy who brought us the Kinect Lightsaber Hack.

Now the clever hacker has managed to get his Microsoft Kinect to control Super Mario on his PC, and as you will see in the video below, Mario’s movements in the game are controlled by body movements.

The hack was done using OpenKinect to get the Kinect to communicate with the PC, he also used an NES emulator to play the game, it certainly looks like a lot of fun.

Orange UK To Offer Subsidized iPad For £199

Last week we told you that four mobile phone operators in the UK would start selling a subsidized iPad, now Orange UK is the first of the four companies to announce the pricing and monthly contract deals.

Orange will be offering the iPad with WiFi and 3G on a monthly contract which will cost exisiting customer £25 per month and new customers £27 per month, and this is a two year contract and you will get 1GB of data per month.

The 16GB WiFi and 3G iPad will be available for £199, the 32GB iPad will retail for £249 whilst the 64GB iPad will retail for £349, and this is bound to attract a lot of customers who wouldn’t want to pay the full price of the iPad up front.

Orange have yet to announce the exact date that the subsidized iPad will be available, you can register for more information over at their website.

The next time an astronaut is driving a vehicle moving on these tires he should quip “Look Ma, no air!”

Rightly so, because these ultra rugged wire tires are exactly that—made of woven wire. Wire springs to be specific. Layers and layers of springs designed to withstand the most extreme environments possible. Environments found beyond our world, unmindful of humanity’s feeble efforts to leave his temporal confines and lose himself in the vast unknown.

Okay, so the paragraph above went a bit over board. The point we’re making is NASA and Goodyear have conspired to build the ultimate off-road tire. The material is dead simple, its capabilities are awesome, to say the least. For example, these tires can withstand impacts and survive them much much better than your average inflated rubber. Since the material is made of springs, it also contours itself according to the terrain, providing excellent traction.

For these reasons the Spring Tire received the top prize at the R&D 100 in Orlando, Florida this year. Already tested on a lunar rover, the Spring Tire is set to become part of a lunar mission in the near future. Unless of course, India or China adapts this minor innovation and get there first.

Boeing Bent On Mass-Producing Super Efficient Solar Cells

All the hoopla surrounding solar cells these days revolve around a single capability: conversion rates. So here comes Spectrolab, a Boeing subsidiary, claiming their latest C3MJ+ solar cells have an average conversion efficiency of 39.2%.

What this means is they now have a flashy new product to ship come 2011, one that will service the satellites orbiting the Earth against a backdrop of the starry heavens. Spectrolab is already an industry leader in solar cells, with 60% of satellites carrying panels they build. Boeing has its sight on dominating the market and has plans of rolling out even more impressive solar cells next year.

But the truth is the performance of the C3MJ+ is not record breaking. If records are to be mentioned, distinction rightfully belongs to the 41.6% efficiency of an experimental test cell last year. Efficiencies in the same league were also achieved much earlier. The main difference these days is Spectrolab and Boeing can build viable products with such technology.

Whether you can buy these solar cells at your local hardware is a head scratcher though. Boeing seems to be fixated on satellites more than the public.

It’s actually an odd sculpture that can pop open a beer bottle in no time.

Created y some esoteric chick/artisan over at Bathsheba Sculpture, this stainless steel headscratcher (as in you’ll initially scratch your head thinking what it’s for) is supposed to aid people during their periods of alcoholic revelry. Below is a mouthful of pseudo-scientific doctrine explaining the why behind the bottle opener’s existence:

“The problem of beer That it is within a ‘bottle’, i.e. a boundaryless compact 2-manifold homeomorphic to the sphere. Since beer bottles are not (usually) pathological or “wild” spheres, but smooth manifolds, they separate 3-space into two non-communicating regions: inside, containing beer, and outside, containing you. This state must not remain.

A proposed solution Clearly the elegant course is to introduce a non-orientable manifold, which has one side and does not divide 3-space. When juxtaposed with the beer-bounding manifold described above, it acts to disrupt the continuity thereof, canceling the outdated paradigm of distinction between interior and exterior. This enables the desired interaction between beer and self.

Implementation The Klein Bottle Opener¹ shown above is an example. It is palm-sized, durably constructed in stainless steel, effective¹, and blissfully ergonomic.

Disgruntled Apple Employee Rants On Hilarious Anti-Apple Blog

There are more than just a few sidesplitting nuggets of venomous contempt found at the CrApple Store blog.

If Apple fanboy worship could be measured and quantified, we’re 100% sure the data would be off the charts. Unfortunately there’s also a lot of hate directed at the brand and its iconic founder, one Mr. Steve Jobs. A serious dose of said hate boils and spills across the bite-sized rants at Welcome to the CrApple Store; billed by its founder as an anonymous employee’s vengeance on his/her day job at Apple Retail.

As mentioned, the often explicit rants are aimed exclusively at management and the work culture going on at your nearby Apple store. Since the blog is driven by an anonymous writer, the only names he singles out are his bosses, like Apple Retail head Ron Johnson. The brains behind CrApple Store also paints a bleak picture of the company at the employee level, bemoaning shabby treatment and overwork with much foul language to make up for what the writing lacks in prose.

Unfortunately, we have to share that hilarious the blog may be, we ourselves have serious doubts whether it isn't just a below-the-belt smear campaign. The problem with CrApple Store is the posts are superficially short, the details are too obvious (there’s even a rant about the “ostentatiousness” of the Apple store in New York), and you end up asking this question: if the person hates his/her job so much, why not quit?

It’s the future, boys and girls, and when it becomes commercially viable expect the world of computers to take the next big evolutionary step forward.

Before we explain the socks out of this emerging new technology allow us a moment’s digression for a short message. The short message is “Warning: Prolific use of the word quantum is sprinkled among the sentences below.”

It all begins with the so far too-difficult-to-define quantum information, which the California Institute of Technology has found a way to transmit via quantum hard drives. The value of this breakthrough is it can overhaul optical based data storage that’s still in vogue among hard drives today.

“…the concept could be applied to more parallel transfers in future quantum drivess, with the number being virtually unlimited. The concept is based on electromagnetic transparency that absorbs four quantum channels and slows down the light to zero for storage.

Lasers were used to cool the four quantum memories, each made up of one million cesium atoms that are magnetically separated by one millimeter. The technique was first achieved by Caltech five years ago, but was limited to two ensembles. The Institute has now applied it theoretically to unlimited nodes and made a computer possible.”

Is Google TV In Trouble?

Google has big plans for its Google TV platform, their plan was to get a Google TV device into every home, either via a set top box or a Google TV enabled TV, but there are now signs that the platform may be in trouble.

The Google TV platform was released just over a month ago, with the first Google TV device, the Logitech Revue, this was quickly followed by Google TV enabled TVs from Sony.

Now Sony are offering discounts of 25 percent off their Blu-ray Google TV units, which normally doesn’t happen so soon after a products launch unless there is a lack of demand for it.

One of the major problems with Google TV, is the price of the hardware, the cheapest way to get Google TV into your living room is via a Logitech Revue set top box, this will cost you $300, compare this to Apple TV which costs $99, although the two platforms are not comparable at the moment as the Apple TV lacks many of the features of Google TV.

Another problem that Google TV has faced, is content being blocked by TV studios, many have blocked Google TV from accessing their videos which can normally be viewed on their websites.

If users are unable to view content on the Google TV that they would normally view on tehir computer, this is a problem for Google, as the whole concept of Google TV is designed to bring the web to your living room.

2011 MacBook Pro To Feature SSD, Light Peak And No DVD

Apple’s release of the new MacBook Air last month, gives us a bit of a clue of things to come for the 2011 MacBook Pro, their advertising uses the phrase ‘The next generation of MacBooks’, which could give us a hint at what we will see in next years MacBook Pro.

The new MacBook Air doesn’t have a hard drive, instead it has a solid state drive, and there is also no DVD drive, instead it comes with the installation software on a USB drive.

Does Apple have similar things planned for the 2011 MacBook Pro? According to Three Guys and a Podcast, we will see significant changes to the 2011 MacBook Pro, the most notable will be a shift from hard drives to solid state storage with SSDs up to 512GB.

"The new MacBook Pros will move to solid state storage, up to 512GB, remove the optical drive, and we believe light-peak is being pushed to make it's first-ever entrance into the market, another Apple exclusive."

Other features tipped for the 2011 MacBook Pro include Light Peak, which is a new ultra fast data transfer technology, with speeds of up to 10Gbps, which has been billed as the successor to USB 3.0.

Apple may also do away with the DVD drive, just like in the MacBook Air, although it is possible that they could still offer a 15 inch model with a DVD drive, as many users would want this.

If you’re the type who wants a little more cheek in canned goods and other household items, then better shop at Hoxton Monster Supply one of these days.

We’re not exactly sure what the above tastes like—or if there’s anything inside it at all-but the entire effect and old world charm (say, late nineteenth century) has us in stitches. Apparently these fear themed cans have a dozen odd variants, each describing that most loathsome emotion with a clever selection of words and phrases long unused today. A Vague Sense of Unease? Right.

If you want a broader selection of gastronomic shockers, go to this Flickr page for a look at what else is on the shelves at Huxton. The pickled jars are a scream—Maiden’s Hair? We’d love to have a few of these lying around the house even if we’d never actually put the ontens in our lunch sandwich. (But who knows? Maybe.)

Not just an HDD bearing the iconic bunny logo, but a digital archive of every Playboy magazine published since 1953.

We. Are. Not. Kidding. Every single issue of Playboy since day dot. Not only does this appeal to lad mag devotees out there but all red-blooded males (and open-minded females) with a sense of history as well. It’s Playboy, people, and Bondi Digital just threw each issue inside a special 250gb hard disk drive.

Considering its awesome bonus content, this hard drive deserves a special place in your, er, collection—of hard drives. Yes, don’t you collect hard drives like we do?

Alas, a good thing must always have a catch. The catch here is it costs $300 and if you live outside the US someone else has gotta mail it to you. That someone else could be a trusty relative, but they might keep this for themselves, which is plain terrible.

If you cannot trust your fellow man, we suggest getting in touch with an aunt or a distant trustworthy friend-of-a-friend. They might be more understanding and less scheming. Then again, they might also get their hands on this, be offended for one reason or other, and throw it away. Or maybe give it to their husband or nephew.

Microsoft Have A Touchscreen Keyboard In The Works

Reports have confirmed Microsoft’s quest for the ultimate touchscreen keyboard thanks to a November 25 patent application. Unlike Acer, Nokia, and a bunch of others who’ve tried, Microsoft intends to create a newfangled typing interface that actually has texture. Tall order, you say?

While the technology won’t be applied on laptops and handheld devices, Microsoft’s newest patent is expected to be a game-changer once it comes to life in the near future. How does it work? It’s all a matter of pixel sized shape-memory plastic. Activated by UV light, which has cells underneath the touchscreen they rest on, the shape-memory plastic is arranged in a grid pattern. When ready for use, they “stick out” like a hologram, begging to be poked.

This innovation is expected to alter the current practice of touch sensitive controls. Rather than contort our fingers, shape-memory plastic allows us to manipulate physical (or near physical) controls by giving us the merest sensation of familiar keyboard contours.

But the big question remains whether, contrary to Mirosoft’s plans, a similar technology will bless handhed devices soon. It’s just such an obvious marriage of convenience. Imagine your tablet embedded with one. For some people, typing on a tablet these days is rather, uh, tedious. Think of that tedium gone once there’s a UV-activated keyboard right at your fingertips.

Do you know your true self? Are you capable of extraordinary athletic feats? No? Maybe? Then quick, get tissue sample from the side of your mouth and mail it to MyGene’s Sports Gene Test.

What the Australian lab does is run the Sports Gene Test, which analyzes 18 gene variants for exercise and fitness information. What for? To map out your overall prowess as an athlete/would-be athlete. MyGene wants to use its research for the benefit of the sporting community so that serious sportsmen will know what they’re good at and where they come short.

But due to the controversy surrounding gene testing the service is only open to people 18 years old and above. So please don’t send your kid’s DNA sample expecting news that he/she is a genius or a superb physical specimen. (Isn’t this oddly reminiscent of that movie Gattaca?) Even the head honcho scientist at MyGene sets the same boundaries: “We don’t feel 100 per cent comfortable with the potential for a child to be discriminated against based on their genotype.”

To keep their research neutral and protect the customer’s dignity, MyGene makes sure it works with anonymous submissions. Don’t send them your name and biographical info; all they need is an address to mail back their findings.

NASA Rolls Out High Tech Space Plane For Vague Reasons

We run a significant number of space related stories here at Geeky Gadgets every month and for good reason: it’s the final frontier, right? Below is a story about NASA’s latest scramble for a working piece of equipment at a time when the agency isn’t as endowed with generous funding compared to previous administrations.

If you’ve been scrutinizing the pic above, rest assured those aren’t the Autobots racing down a desert highway to battle the evil Decepticons. Nuh-uh, it’s just a plain harmless convoy heading to the Mojave desert to unload its flying cargo according to NASA’s wishes.

The two X-34s being trucked are pioneer robot aircraft developed throughout the 90s and successfully tested ten years ago, then zip. Nada. They were left in an Air Force hangar, from where they got moved to a bombing range until the present. So why are they being dusted off and brought back to NASA? Basically a lack of options: NASA badly needs a viable (and cheap) spacecraft for whatever future missions it has in mind.

Said missions could be in sync with the growing space tourism industry which calls for light, compact aircraft that can re-enter the atmosphere without a hitch. If NASA plans on commercializing this hunk of barely used equipment, then godspeed to them. Let’s hope a decade of disuse hasn’t reduced the X34′s performance capabilities.

T-Mobile UK To Offer Subsidized iPad

We have heard this week from a number of UK mobile phone operators that they will be offering a subsidized iPad with a monthly data plan in the UK.

Orange, Three and Vodafone have all said that they will start to offer a cheaper iPad when you sign up to a monthly contract, now UK mobile operator T-Mobile has announced that they will be offering a subsidized iPad in the UK.

T-Mobile have been sending out emails to existing customers, letting them know that they will be able to purchase an iPad at a reduced price if they sign up to a monthly data contract.

None of the four companies have as yet announce how much they will be selling the iPad for, and there are still no details on how much these monthly data plans will cost.

The only company who has so far confirmed that it will not be offering a subsidized iPad in the UK is O2, we suspect they will be waiting for the launch of the iPad 2 before they announce this.

US Government Seizes BitTorrent Sites

The US Government has seized a number of sites in the US related to copyright infringement, one of the sites seized is a BitTorrent search engine called torrent-finder.com.

If you visit the site, you will see the following message (pictured below), which shows that the site has been seized by ICE and Homeland Security Investigations.

The seized site doesn’t host any torrent files, and has no torrent tracker, it also list no copyright works, unless someone searches for it, the site is in effect a search engine, similar to Google, albeit specifically for BitTorrent files.

The owner of the site told the guys over at TorrentFreak what happened to the site when it was seized by the US Government.

"My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!"

"I firstly had DNS downtime. While I was contacting GoDaddy I noticed the DNS had changed. Godaddy had no idea what was going on and until now they do not understand the situation and they say it was totally from ICANN,"

A number of other sites were also seized in the crack down by the Department of Homeland Security.

Windows Phone 7 Jailbreak, Microsoft Responds

Yesterday we told you about a new unlock tool for Windows Phone 7 called ChevronWP7, the tool lets Windows Phone 7 users load applications onto their smartphones without going through the Windows Phone 7 marketplace.

Microsoft has now responded to the release of the tool, and as you would imagine, the response is very similar to that of Apple, when the first jailbreak tool was released for the Apple iPhone.

We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.

There are not details as yet on whether Microsoft will attempt to block the unlock tool with a software update, although we suspect that Microsoft will be playing the same cat and mouse game with jailbreakers that Apple has with the iPhone for some time.

Pirate Bay Appeal Lost, Founders Get 6.5 Million Fine And Jail Time

The Pirate Bay has been appealing against the previous decision of the Swedish courts for some time now, yesterday the Pirate bay founders Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundström lost their appeal in the Swedish court of appeals, and the previous ruling had been upheld.

The court decided to reduce the three Pirate Bay founders jail sentences, who were all given a 12 months sentence bay in April 2009, this has now been reduced to 10 months for Fredrik Neij, 8 months for Peter Sunde and 4 months for Carl Lundström.

The fine that the three founders face has now been increased from 30 million kronor to 46 million kronor, about $6.5 million, although as yet the ruling has had no effect on the Pirate Bay website which is still running as normal.

Of course the MPA had something to say about this , here is a quote from Chris Marcich, President and Managing Director of the MPA Europe.

"Now that a Swedish Court has declared the operators of The Pirate Bay guilty of copyright infringement for a second time, we hope the relevant authorities will take the appropriate action to ensure that The Pirate Bay ceases its illegal activities.”

Some how we just can’t see it happening, The Pirate Bay will probably be around for quite a long time, and if they are ever shut down, more sites will spring up to take their place.

Designer Finds Way To End Scourge Of Pigeon Poop

Pigeon poop. You ever got your coat, jacket, or hair splattered by the white stuff with bits of dark green? Gross, right? If Tuur Van Balen has his way, such ‘accidents’ will be a thing of the past thanks to a special kind of feeding he developed.

Van Balen’s plan involves building special shelters—not cages, but shelters—for pigeons to congregate in so they can be fed a substance that contains a super secret bacteria. What the bacteria is we don’t know, but what it does is hilarious—it turns the pigeon’s feces into sterile detergent. In Van Balen’s own words it’s “like yogurt for humans.”

What van Balen’s invention does is erase the nuisance of pigeon feces in big cities, itself an immense feat of public service. Even better, with this newfangled bird poop citizens now have a free substance for window cleaning. Wunnerful!

If it works spectacularly on the digestive system of pigeons we’re wondering if the same can be done with humans. Seriously, take babies for example. Babies doodie all over the place, spreading much grossness and dismay. Now what if they’re fed with Van Balen’s formula, effectively turning their diaper destroying discharges into, well, yogurt soap? Cool, huh? Besides, isn’t yogurt easier to clean than poop?

Or how about us? As in regular adults. Maybe a commercialized human-friendly dish similar to Van Balen’s can finally rid us of smelly poop and noxious farts. Except for Peter Griffin, who likes ‘em anyway?

Russia Vows To Terminate Space Trash

With a $2 billion nuclear-powered pod that will orbit the Earth for 15 years and rid it of debris.

The project is an initiative of Russian space corporation Energia to reduce the potential for accidents/collisions in the dark yonder above earth. But this new project whose goal is to rid space of 600 pieces of man-made debris that threaten outbound space craft and working satellites won’t (literally) get off the ground until 2020. Energia expects it to start working by 2023 and continue for 15 years.

While details are next to nil, Energia’s space clean up amitions will be realized by a “pod” whose sole task is knocking out large debris out of orbit onto a trajectory where they’ll burn up in the atmosphere. If they don’t, Energia has another solution in store: an interceptor to track and disrupt the course of debris that risk crashing into the earth.

It’s ambitious stuff, especially the nuclear-powered part. Unlike NASA, which seems adrift at the moment, Russia once again has its sights set on casting a shadow across the Earth from outer space. While Energia’s plans are benign, some bloggers unwilling to let go of their Cold War misgivings have raised concerns about a dual role for these new spacecraft. You know, like knocking out “enemy” satellites?
